Facing Reality
Hello from Charleston, South Carolina, where the America you see on TV, raging against Jews in general and Israel specifically, is nowhere to be found. My uber driver from the airport told me that she prays for Israel nightly—and this was before I told her I’m Jewish. Signs like this are common:
I note this for two reasons. One, on my podcast, the Karol Markowicz Show, a question I ask all of my guests is to identify our largest cultural problem. So many say “social media” and that sounds about right to me. Social media gives the impression that America is on fire, that the Hamasniks on our college campuses are the majority. They fill comment sections with the demand that someone, somewhere, maybe you in this rugelach cooking video, “free Palestine.” The reality is somewhere else entirely.
But two, I want my liberal Jewish friends to face that no, the rage and the violence and the taunts of Jewish students, is not happening *everywhere.* It’s very specifically happening in left-leaning places, the kind they have supported and encouraged for years.
As I noted in a popular tweet recently:
A theme in my life, and in my writing, has been encouraging people to face reality. An example I give of this is that when I grew up in 1980s Brooklyn, everyone agreed crime was happening and it was bad. But in 2020 Brooklyn, that became something you do not say. That has led to crime spiraling out of control and the National Guard being called in to subway stations. It didn’t have to be that way had reality been faced earlier.
I want American Jews to face reality now. The Jewish vote has already been (slowly) shifting rightward, as I layed out in my prescient, if I do say so myself, piece from January 2023, The New Jew.
As I noted, it was the Jews who had experienced pain and strife who voted Republican.
American Jews are experiencing some degree of pain and strife for the first time in generations. Their kids are being targeted on college campuses. They’re having to minimize their Jewishness, and certainly any support they have for Israel, in a manner they never have before. May this wake them up. I’m not predicting a huge shift in 2024 but incremental changes matter and the trend has been heading the right way. Also, as I said on America Reports recently, why don’t Democrats seem to care about the Jewish vote at all? This is a question Jewish Democrats need to seriously ask themselves:
Some of my recent work since last I wrote:
As more cities decide that prosecuting crime isn’t important, Miami Beach has been a recent success story for doing the opposite. Their new mayor, Steven Meiner, elected in November, has made curbing crime, and bad behavior during Spring Break a priority. The city launched an ad campaign, that went super viral, “breaking up” with Spring Break. It appears the campaign itself went a long way toward dissuading law breaking. Just saying that those committing crimes will be punished actually led to few crimes. Read my column about it here: https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/heres-how-miami-beach-successfully-broke-up-spring-break
For my first ever column at JNS, I wrote about Hollywood Jews and who they pretend to be: https://www.jns.org/jeremy-piven-and-an-all-too-apt-performance/
In the NY Post, I wrote about a giant study out of the Netherlands showing that transgenderism in children is largely a fad. It’s the kind of thing we all intrinsically know to be true but it’s nice to have data to support that: https://nypost.com/2024/04/04/opinion/believe-data-not-activists-transgenderism-among-kids-is-mostly-a-fad
At Fox News I covered the ongoing absenteeism crisis in our schools. If only someone could have predicted that long-term closures of our schools would lead to giant problems. (Me, I predicted it, along with many other smart people who were ignored) https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/schools-forever-education-bosses-excuse-skip-class
I was on Varney&Co. to discuss it:
I also talked about how the scourge of wokeness continues to rage in places like UCLA Medical School. It shouldn’t just be Jewish people who have a problem with this kind of lunacy:
Here are the interviews I’ve done on the Karol Markowicz Show since the last time I’ve sent out a newsletter:
